Well-earned draw for Indonesia in Ecuador opener

SURABAYA (10 November 2023) – Indonesia almost pulled one for the history books but had to be content with a well-earned 1-1 draw against Ecuador in their opening game of Group A of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium.

Arkhan Kaka became the first Indonesian to score at the FIFA U17 World Cup when he gave the home team the lead in the 22nd minute with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner of the Ecuadorian goal.

However, Allen Obando found the equaliser for Ecuador six minutes later with a header to the top left corner off a cross from Santiago Sánchez.

Both teams tried hard in search of the winner in the second half but to no avail – even with an added time of 13 minutes.

In the end, the 1-1 draw was a good enough start for both teams as they look to play their second game of Group A on 13 November 2023.

On the other hand in the other match in Group A, Morocco beat Panama 2-0.

Saifdine Chlaghmo’s 15th minute header gave Morocco the lead as Ayman Ennair then fired in the second goal late in the 94th minute of play to underline their intention for a place in the next round.

In the other matches of the day in Group B, Mali beat Uzbekistan 2-0 as Spain then overcame Canada by the same scoreline.
